Optical Illusion Painting & Time Lapse

| February 13, 2012 | Categories: Inspiration

Real happy to see creativity running in the family. My cousin, Jeff Frost, roamed the deserts of California and Utah looking for abandoned structures to paint and photograph. Enormous amounts of work went into planning and shooting 40,000 still images for this video. Not only that, but the painting and video editing are just as impressive. Well worth 4 minutes of your time.

Rare Footage of Steve Jobs from 1980

| January 25, 2012 | Categories: Inspiration

This is amazing 23-minute footage of Steve Jobs discussing Apple in 1980. The audio & video getting a little shoddy in the middle, but it’s still great.

“Man is a toolmaker, and has the ability to make a tool to amplify an apparent ability that he is.” He certainly did a wonderful job of that with computers. Thank you Steve!

This video was gifted to Computer History Museum by Regis McKenna and can be found on their online exhibit about Steve Jobs here: http://www.computerhistory.org/highlights/stevejobs/

Indoor Rock Climbing Spotlight

| January 13, 2012 | Categories: Inspiration

As a dude who sits at a computer mostly all day for work, and then does even more sitting in front of a computer after work for pleasure, I’ve been looking for a new form of exercise. My problem is I get bored with running or lifting heavy items, so I haven’t really stuck with an exercise routine in quite some time. Needless to say, this new form of exercise needed to be fun or there’s no way I would stick with it.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been going to Texas Rock Gym and climbing rock walls for fun. I’m having a blast so far. With all other hobbies I pick up, I was looking for ways to improve either my strength or my techqnique when I came across this inspiring video about indoor rock climbing. Enjoy!

HQ Art by Andy Gilmore

| October 3, 2011 | Categories: Inspiration

Andy Gilmore - Cellula Memoralis

I was pleasantly surprised to find this art in my Inbox one day. Here’s some back story on how it got there. I downloaded an iPhone app a few months back called Ghostly Discovery, which is a streaming radio station that helps you discover music based on your mood. There are 3 criteria for filtering the music:

  1. The first is a mood wheel. Your options are Aggressive, Frenetic, Energetic, Neutral, Laid Back, Introspective, or Sad.
  2. The second is a slider with “Digital” on one end and “Organic” on the other.
  3. The third is another slider. “Faster” or “Slower”

I thought it was a pretty cool idea for an app, but I hadn’t used it in a while. Then one day I got an email from Ghostly. They do more than just music discovery. They also have art for sale through an online store.

Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps

| September 15, 2011 | Categories: Inspiration

We had the opportunity to design an iPhone app with one of our clients and it was an amazing experience. The first thing we did was buy Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps. I wanted to take a minute to share some of what I learned from this great read:

Focus Your App

There are thousands of apps, and some of them are great at what they do. The best, however, are very focused apps. When an app tries to do too much, the interactions and controls get complicated, making it less usable. Make the core of your app flawless, instead of getting sidetracked throwing the kitchen sink at it.

Surf’s Up

| April 1, 2011 | Categories: Inspiration, Randomness

I have never seen anything like this on a surfboard. Matt Meola is a 20-year old kid from North Shore Maui. I’m absolutely stunned by how much air he gets off those waves.

Now, to figure out how to design websites as awesome as this dude can surf.

Varying Views on the Cost of Photoshop

| February 22, 2011 | Categories: Business

I found this article on the cost of Photoshop very interesting. It argues both sides. Below is an excerpt from the post.

On Photoshop Being Affordable

Todd Hemker, co-owner of the design company Yellowshed breaks it down this way: “If I were buying Photoshop as a stand-alone application the initial cost is $699 and the average lifespan of any particular version is roughly two years. If you use it daily, that brings the cost to under $2.00 a day.” Or roughly $60 a month. Chances are most designers, freelance or not, make at least $60 a month. “However,” he concedes, ” if we were just out of school and working as freelance designers – there’s no way we would be able to put down that kind of cash!”

I couldn’t do my job without Photoshop. I look at it as an investment. $2.00 a day is very affordable considering how much a website costs.
